Drawing from Isaiah 61, Kevin highlights God’s desire to move people through transformational doorways: from brokenheartedness to healing, mourning to comfort, ashes to beauty, and captivity to freedom.
Kevin uses the picture of a longtime prisoner struggling to adjust after release to illustrate a spiritual reality: sometimes freedom feels harder than captivity. He connects this to Israel after leaving Egypt. Although miraculously delivered, they repeatedly romanticized their former bondage when freedom became difficult. True freedom requires responsibility, discipline, stewardship, and perseverance.
He distinguishes between captives, who experience bondage because of what happened to them, and prisoners, whose own choices contributed to their bondage. The good news is that Jesus offers freedom to both.
Kevin concludes that freedom is often a journey of baby steps—choosing truth over lies, repenting, exposing secrets, forgiving, and continuing forward even when returning to the familiar seems easier. Ultimately, we are set free not merely for ourselves, but so we can help others find freedom and advance God’s Kingdom.
